Ilmari Tapiovaara - artek

Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914 - 1999), a Finnish designer, was well-known for his furniture and textile designs. Tapiovaara started his career by designing furniture to be used in fields by the Finnish Army during World War II. In 1946, Tapiovaara received praise and recognition for the Domus Chair, one of his most popular designs to this day, which Ilmari designed with his wife for Domus Academica student housing. The Domus Chair started as a series intended for students. Yet, Ilmari Tapiovaara’s eye for comfort and functionality made the chairs popular for homes and public seating areas.
