Oiva Toikka (1931 - 2019), a Finnish glass designer and artist, is well-known for his Birds Collection for Iittala. Toikka attended the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki where he studied ceramics and started his path of unconventional sculpture techniques. After his formal training in ceramics, Toikka began working for Nuutaj?rvi--a leading Finish glassworks company in 1963. In 1972, Oiva Toikka introduced his first hand blown glass bird, the Flycatcher which led to high praise and idolization by designers, artists, and collectors. The beautiful and collectible glass birds embody a unique personality and are all handmade by highly skilled glassblowers.
