Afteroom is a design studio based in Stockholm founded and run by husband-and-wife Chen-Yen Wei and Hung-Ming Chen. Chen and Wei are both originally from Taiwan, later moving to Stockholm in 2006. Wei grew up in Taipei City, Taiwan and graduated from National Taipei College of Business, although her passions were deeply rooted in fashion design. Chen grew up in Taichung City, where his parents ran a small factory producing guitar components. Always captivated by how things are made, he studied electrical engineering in highschool, later switching to Industrial Design. He then went on to pursue a master’s in Design at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. After designing electronics for a short time, Chen realized that “Once we design a cell phone, it’s going to disappear within 2 or 3 years. You will never see it again.” He decided that furniture was much more satisfying in that “the lifespan is much, much longer. If you make a good chair, it will last forever.” This ideology became the underlying basis of Afteroom’s mission of creating beautiful products that will add value over time - design to grow old with. The studio specializes in offering product and interior design consulting services, in which Wei and Chen both work together. Chen will first typically draws sketches and designs 3-D models, after which Wei will take over as Art Director to pick colors, finishes, and ultimately which projects she finds the most viable to undertake and move forward with.
