Vilhelm Lauritzen

Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984) is one of the most famous Danish modern architects and designers that lead the movement of functionalism in design. After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1921, he founded his own architectural firm, Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter. Several of his most noteworthy buildings such as the Norrebro Theatre, Daells Varehus department store, Radiohuset, and the Kastrop Copenhagen airport are prime examples of modernism and contemporary style that grew out of Europe. Lauritzen believed that design should be guided by the purpose of the item being designed rather than using excessive ornamentation purely for aesthetics.
